Kupol, IEMP (Izhevsk Electromechanical Plant) improves its ADMS and expands their scope of application

Izhevsk Electromechanical Plant Kupol (is a part of Concern VKO ‘Almaz-Antey’) decided to present its advanced development Tor-M2DT Antiaircraft Missile System at the International Airspace Show MAKS-2017. This System created for work in arctic conditions will certainly become a sensation of the Show, manufacturers and developers present their newest products to the general public not so often, and even more so prototypes.

Tor-M2DT ADMS, the Arctic version of the Tor-M2 system, was firstly shown to the general public on May 9, 2017 during the parade on Red Square. Now there is an opportunity to get acquainted with this combat vehicle. System combat tools are placed on a two-section cross-country type tracked chassis, this ADMS can operate in conditions of total impassability, on a strongly broken, snow-covered and icy terrain. All the necessary conditions are created for the effective system operation under the conditions of the Arctic winter. ADMS combat tools are also adapted to work in the Arctic. These products are designed to protect the sky on the northern borders of our motherland in the most extreme conditions.

Tor-M2DT is not the only product of Kupol, IEMP. Last year, the first supplies of the newest Tor-M2 missile systems to the Air Defense Team of the Russian Ground Forces took place. The plant managed to achieve a serious improvement in the tactical and technical characteristics of the ADMS produced by it. Compared with previous versions, the new complex doubled the ammunition. The new-generation missiles have an extended zone of destruction and increased shooting accuracy.

Another important achievement is the provision of opportunity for the short-range SAM system to spew shells in motion. In 2015, Tor-M2U hit the targets, moving at a speed of 25 km/h, in 2016, successful firing was carried out while the combat vehicle was moving at a speed of 45 km/h. Now, the air defense missile systems produced by the Izhevsk Electromechanical Plant Kupol can the world’s first perform the continuous coverage of troops on the march and when carrying out maneuvers in a battle.

Speaking about the new Tors, it should be noted that Kupol, IEMP has been the main enterprise not only in production, but also in the development of the short-range SAM systems since 2013. The plant itself is developing its own special equipment, being in fact a research and production complex.

In addition to the deep modernization of the complexes, the plant has diversified the transport base in order to expand the scope of its ADMSs. In addition to the systems on the traditional tracked chassis, a wheel version — Tor-M2K was created, which is preferable for countries with a developed network of hard-surfaced roads. Another version is the autonomous combat module of Tor-M2KM, which is placed on any customer’s chassis with capacity of 15 tonnes as well as it can be transported on the external load of the helicopter and placed in inaccessible places – on the prevailing heights in the mountainous terrain, roofs of buildings, etc.

In September 2016, the autonomous combat module of Tor-M2KM ADMS passed the target practice in various air target types broadside on Admiral Grigorovich frigate sailing in the open sea at speeds of 8 knots. It was the world’s first successful firing of a land-based ADMS from the side of a warship. They once again demonstrated the broadest possibilities of application of the Tor ADMS and became an important step in the ongoing work on creating unified sea and land short-range air defense systems.

... Tor family ADMS is the modern enterprise production. However, Osa ADMS, which is the first short range air defense system manufactured by Izhevsk Electromechanical Plant, is in service with the Russian army and twenty armies of different countries worldwide. The enterprise has developed the upgrading program of ADMS to the level of Osa-AKM1, which provides the system with the military characteristics associated with Tor-M1 ADMS characteristics. As a result, the customer receives a budget option of a fully modern ADMS. Due to the favorable price/quality ratio, the product has a large export potential.

A wide range of special equipment produced by JSC IEMP Kupol will be presented at MAKS-2017 in the form of mock-ups.

Also the full-scale specimen of the commander and operator’s simulator at the show; Kupol, IEMP produces not only ADMS’s, but also means for crews learning and training. The simulator provides computer simulation of the target situation and allows for training of crews at minimal cost.

All the defense products of Kupol, IEMP are the best in its class. The work on improving the Tor family ADMS’s lasts constantly.

The introduction of revolutionary developments in Russian military-technical ideas, regular technical re-equipment of production, strict quality control of products, effective management and attention to personnel – this is what ensures the sustainable leadership of the Tor missile system in the class of short-range air defense.
The main purpose of the Tor missile system is the anti-aircraft cover of tank divisions, motorized brigades and especially important targets. Also Tors are a part of the echelon air defense system, where they work in cooperation with S-300 and S-400 surface-to-air missile system and Buk ADMS providing their cover at short range, where long-range complexes are vulnerable to the air threats that breached the first holding line.

Tor missile systems are capable of effectively countering tactical aircraft, helicopters on the battlefield, incl. using the ‘hovering’ method, UAVs, including small-size, anti-radar missiles, low-flying cruise missiles, guided bombs, other modern and promising means of the air attack.

The modern Tors are able to detect up to 48 targets for one radar antenna rotation over a distance of 32 km, attend 10 of them, rank by the degree of threat and at the same time bombard the 4 most dangerous. The minimum effective target area is 0.1 sq. m, i.e. the systems are able to deal with the means of air attack, performed by the Stealth technology.

9M331D surface-to-air missiles (SAM) being the part of Tor-M2U ADMS load are capable to intercept targets flying at a speed of up to 700 m/s, at ranges of 1 to 15 km, at heights from 0.01 to 10 km, with a course parameter of up to 8 km. The most advanced 9M338 SAM’s are adopted for Tor-M2 ADMS. The target-destruction probability is estimated as close 100%, which has allowed to abandon the previously used practices of simultaneous firing of one target by two missiles at the same time — today the Tors operate on the principle ‘one target – one missile’.
